COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team defeated Muskingum, 1-0, on Tuesday in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at Bernlohr Stadium.
Capital (7-4 overall, 2-0 OAC) outshot the Fighting Muskies 10-2 in the opening half of play, totaling five shots on goal.
However, neither team managed to tally a first half score, leaving the match scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, much of the same on the offensive front for both teams, as the Crusaders continued to press Muskingum, unloading 10 additional shots in the second frame.
Senior midfielder R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio) finally inked the scoreboard for the game's first goal in the 88th minute of play, scoring off a direct kick from just outside the Fighting Muskies box.
The Crusaders then managed to continue their defensive prowess for the remaining two minutes of play, eventually notching their second straight OAC win to open the conference portion of their schedule.
Leading the way for the Crusaders was Florey, scoring his sixth goal of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio) earned his third win in goal and first shut out of the season.
With the win, the Crusaders now sit tied atop the OAC standings at 2-0, having won five of their last six games.
Capital is scheduled to host cross-town rival Otterbein on Saturday in its next match at Bernlohr Stadium. First kick is set for 2 p.m.
