COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team showed grit in its Ohio Athletic Conference opening match Saturday but was unable to complete its comeback effort in a 2-1 setback against John Carroll at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Crusaders (3-4-3 overall, 0-1 OAC) cut their 2-0 deficit in half on a goal from senior forward Tim McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio) in the 79th minute. McCarthy took a punt from senior goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio) and found the back of the net for the second time this season. It was Weisgarber's second assist of the year.

Capital was unable to put a shot on goal the rest of the way as the Blue Streaks (8-2, 1-0), currently ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region by the NSCAA, hung on for the win.

The Crusaders were outshot 22-7 in the contest and took just one corner kick, compared to eight for John Carroll.

Weisgarber totaled 11 saves in 90 minutes for Capital. McCarthy, freshman midfielder Colton Phillips (Bellbrook, Ohio) and sophomore midfielder Chris Mir-Salimi (Strongsville, Ohio) each tallied three shots in the match.

The Blue Streaks posted goals in the 30th and 55th minutes of the contest.

The Crusaders look to get back on track this Wednesday at Ohio Northern. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. in Ada.
