Early Run to Much to Overcome for Men’s Lacrosse

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – In a highly-anticipated OAC men's lacrosse matchup between the Capital University Crusaders and John Carroll University Blue Streaks, one single run of goals made the difference in the match. The host Blue Streaks made said run and defeated the Crusaders 13-10 at Shula Stadium on Saturday.

After Capital (9-4, 1-2 OAC) opened up with two straight goals, John Carroll (6-5, 2-1) retaliated with three straight scores to close out the first quarter. The tying goal was scored just 29 seconds after JCU's first and their final goal of the quarter was logged with 39 seconds to go.

John Carroll controlled the better part of a 20-minute stretch of time in which they scored eight of nine goals to build an 8-3 lead just two minutes into the third quarter. The Blue Streaks' run featured seven different goal scorers.

The third quarter saw eight total goals scored. Sophomore Carson Paull (Sandpoint, Ida) scored twice in the third frame, as did JCU's Michael Hubert. Paul and Hubert both served as their respective team's leading scorers with three and five goals to their lines.

While Capital won the fourth quarter, their effort was not enough to overcome a four-goal deficit and led to a 13-10 final score. Sophomore Brennan O'Callaghan scored all three of his points in the fourth quarter by way of two goals and one assist.

John Carroll had favorable leads in key categories including shots (50-23), ground balls (49-22), faceoffs won (18-9), and was a perfect 15-for-15 on clear attempts. Capital turned the ball over 23 times to John Carroll's 12.

Junior Cole Palmby recorded his second straight 10-plus save game, posting 15 in the loss. It is his fifth such performance of the season.

Capital will return to Bernlohr Stadium for a Wednesday night matchup with Wilmington College on April 20. Opening faceoff will be held at 7 p.m.
