Initial OAC Victory for Men's Lacrosse
WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team notched its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference victory as a varsity program on Wednesday evening, defeating Wilmington 15-8 at Williams Stadium.
Just under five minutes into the first period, the Crusaders owned the initial lead of the game, leading for nearly 10 minutes, before surrendering back-to-back goals under the one minute mark to the Quakers.
Capital opened up the second quarter with two unanswered goals, retaking the lead at 3-2 with 9:29 remaining in the opening half. Wilmington again responded, scoring two straight goals of its own, as the Quakers then retook the lead at 4-3 with 4:55 left to play before halftime.
However, the Crusaders continued their scoring feat, tacking on two additional scores before the halftime whistle, taking a slim 5-4 lead at the break.
At the half, the Crusaders had forced the Quakers into 14 first half turnovers, while holding a distinct 19-8 shot advantage.
As the second half began, Capital managed to post the first two goals of the third frame, building its lead to 7-4 with just over 13 minutes left in the quarter. The Quakers then managed to match the Crusaders with two goals of their own, cutting their deficit to a one goal lead for Capital.
Over the final 11:22 of the third period, the Crusaders manufactured a 4-0 run, taking a solid 11-6 lead into the final quarter of play.
Wilmington opened the final frame with a goal, its first in just under 12 minutes of action, while the Crusaders retaliated with four unanswered goals to end the game with an eight goal conference road win.
In total, Capital outshot the Quakers 49-16, while also holding an advantage in caused turnovers at 14-6.
Leading the way offensively for the Crusaders was freshman attack Connor Simon (Sylvania, Ohio), who scored a team-high and tied a game-high with five goals, recording six of his eight shots on goal.
Classmate and fellow attack Nick Hess (Horseheads, N.Y.) followed with four goals and two assists, with 10 of his 14 shots coming on goal. Fellow freshman in midfielder Travis Massey (Delaware, Ohio) tallied a pair goals and assists on the night.
Freshman defenders in Adam Thomas (Powell, Ohio) and Tate Stover (Delaware, Ohio), as well as classmates in midfielders Brent Walton (Pickerington, Ohio) and Michael Trefethern (Canfield, Ohio), each tallied one goal apiece in the win.
Thomas also recorded a game-high four caused turnovers, while freshman goalie Jordan Adkins (Lubbock, Tx.) picked up his eighth win in goal, saving two shots for the game.
With the win, Capital (8-3 overall, 1-1 OAC) is scheduled to host cross-town rival Otterbein this coming Saturday in the two teams first-ever meeting as varsity lacrosse programs. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
