PATASKALA, Ohio – The Capital University men's golf team hosted the OAC Spring Invitational at the Cumberland Trail Golf Club on Sunday and Monday. Jake Barstow paved the way for Cap as he shot a combined 151 in the Crusaders third place finish.
Freshman Jake Barstow (Logan, Ohio / Logan) tied for seventh place, with a first round 77 followed by a second round 75. Barstow tied the second lowest score on day two as the golfers had to battle strong winds, which made play tougher than normal.
Sophomore Logan Holbrook (Logan, Ohio / Logan) finished the tournament just one stroke behind his teammate and tied for 11th place. Holbrook started the tournament with a first round 78, but saw the most improvement as he shot a 75 for the second round.
Sophomore Noah Iovino (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) shot a 156 for the tournament as he shot two rounds of 78.
Senior Jeff Czerniakowski (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) posted two rounds of 79. Czerniakowski finished with a two-day total of 158.
Senior Mitchell Cook (Bucyrus, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) posted a first round score of 80 and a second round score of 79. Cook shot a 159 for the tournament.
As a team, Capital shot a 619, which was good enough for a third place finish. The Crusaders shot 312 for the first round and had a 5 stroke improvement on day two, with a 307.
Junior Justin Dearth (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) competed as an individual in the tournament and finished tied for 14th out of 56 golfers. Dearth posted a first round score of 75 and followed that up with a 79-stroke day for the second round. He finished the tournament with a 154.
Otterbein University finished in first place with a total score of 599, while Ohio Northern University posted a 617 for second place.
The top medalist was Scott Schroeder of Baldwin Wallace University, who shot a 144 for the tournament. Austin Wells of Otterbein came in second with a 147 stroke performance.
The Crusaders return to action Friday and Saturday as they travel to the Northstar Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. Cap will compete in the Otterbein Spring Invite before it heads to the OAC Championships.
