COLUMBUS, Ohio – To help keep the Capital University men's golf team fresh, a dual match was scheduled against rival Otterbein University for Wednesday evening at the Columbus Country Club. The Crusaders bested their nemesis by three strokes, 315-312, to take home the win.
Freshman Logan Holbrook posted a strong score on the back nine with a 36, 1-under par to help overcome a one stroke deficit heading into the back stretch. His two birdies on holes 10 and 14 helped Capital surpass Otterbein. He and junior Phillip Martin shot sub-40 back-nine scores while the top of the Cardinals' order lost its edge at a critical juncture.
Standout David Monoco from Otterbein took home top medalist honors, but shot a 41 on the back nine, highest among his teammates. He shot a match score of 76 to edge Holbrook (77) for the top spot.
Senior Daniel Shafer (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Martin both turned in a 78, placing them in a share for third place overall on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Jeff Czerniakowski (Sylvania, Ohio) followed them with a 79 through 18 holes. Oterrbein's Tyler Elgin shared fourth with him with an identical score.
Capital will now prepare for the OAC Spring Invitational, which will commence on Thursday, April 14 at The Country Club of Hudson. It has been shortened to one-day and 27 holes after being washed out this past weekend.
