BLACKLICK, Ohio – Senior Daniel Shafer put together a record-tying single round performance and set new lows for a two-round score at the ODU Kickoff Classic, hosted by Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday. Shafer finished in the top five while the Crusaders put together a sixth-place team finish at the Jefferson Country Club.
Capital golfed a total of 36 holes on Tuesday, and Shafer made the most of them by shooting a 143 two-round total, placing him third in a field of 61 competitors. The Hilliard, Ohio native finished one-under par on the par-72 course.
On Shafer's second pass through the course, he tallied a 69, three-under par. That one-round score tied James Koon's low score recorded in 2007 at Windy Knoll Golf Club. Combining that round with the score from his first 18 holes, he finished with a 143, which resets the new two-round record previously held by Dan Zaborsky, also achieved in 2007.
Junior Jeff Czerniakowski (Sylvania, Ohio) served as the next best placer for Capital, shooting a 153 (77-76), nine-over par to give him a share of 23rd overall.
Freshman Logan Holbrook (Logan, Ohio) was one strike behind Czerniakowski with a 154 (78-76) scorecard. Junior Phillip Martin (86-83-169) and sophomore Ryan Kimmerling (85-93) rounded out the Capital leaderboards.
The University of Indianapolis took the team title by defeating second-place Otterbein (590) by six strokes. The Greyhounds also had the competition's first-place finisher, Graham McAree, who shot a six-under par, 138.
The Crusaders will play host in their next venture to the links at the Capital Fall Classic on Friday, Sept. 18. They will compete at their home course, Royal American Links, in Galena, Ohio.
