HERROD, Ohio – Daniel Shafer led the Capital Crusaders men's golf team with a top-five finish at Friday's Polar Bear Classic, hosted by Ohio Northern University at the Colonial Golfers Club. Capital placed second overall in an eight-team field despite rainy and windy conditions plaguing the course.
In the one-day, 36-hole tournament the Crusaders had three individuals to turn in a 77, five-over par after their first rounds. Sophomore Jeff Czerniakowski (Sylvania, Ohio) and senior Parker McComb (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) shot identical tournament scores and joined Shafer among Capital's first-round successes. However, Shafer pulled away but nearly replicating his score with a second-round 78 to end the tournament with a 155.
Shafer, a Hilliard, Ohio native, turned in the best scorecard among Capital's five entries, tying for fifth place overall in a 46-man field. His first-round 77 was a season best in a single round. His previous round low was 78 turned in following the second round of the OAC Fall Classic on Sept. 15.
Czerniakowski and McComb both shot 82s in their second rounds, finishing with replica 159 scores for a share of 11th place.
Jadee Davis tied for 17th with an 83-79-162 line score.
Capital will close up the fall season by hosting its own tournament, the Capital Fall Classic, on Friday Oct. 10 at Royal American Links (Galena, Ohio).
