Anthony Gholson begins his sixth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Capital University men’s basketball team.
Over his first six seasons as an assistant, Capital players have been granted 13 all-conference awards, including two first team selections (Mark Minch, 2016 and Austin Schreck, 2019). After his first season, Gholson guided forward Michael Sommer (Second Team), and guards AJ Dixon and Mitch Westerheide (honorable mention) to All-OAC laurels. Spencer Niekamp went on to become OAC Player of the Year and a first team all-conference pick. Schreck was named to the All-OAC second team in 2018 and in 2019 was First Team All-OAC, OAC Player of the Year, OAC Defensive Player of the Year, D3hoops and NABC First Team All-Region, Academic All-American and an NABC All-American.
Prior to Capital, Gholson served as head men’s basketball coach at Heidelberg University, where he led the Student Princes to more than 50 victories over the course of five seasons (2008-13). Gholson guided Heidelberg to the 2010 OAC Tournament championship game.
Gholson was also the head coach (2000-04) and director of athletics (1999-05) at Columbus State Community College. While at CSCC, Gholson’s teams compiled an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage) and a trio of 20-win seasons. The Cougars were ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II in 2003-04, when the team won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title for the first time in school history. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Gholson also held assistant coaching positions at Ohio Northern University (2005-08) and Urbana University (2004-05).
Gholson earned his bachelor’s from Ohio Northern in 1988 and his MBA from Bowling Green State University in 1995.
