Men’s Basketball Picked to Finish Third in Coaches’ Preseason Poll

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The conference preseason men's basketball coaches' poll has been released by the Ohio Athletic Conference. A year removed from its regular season championship, Capital University Men's Hoops has been tabbed to finish sixth among the 10 teams in the OAC.

After graduating a high percentage of last year's major contributors, the coaches in the OAC selected Capital to finish sixth, overall. After the votes were tallied Capital compiled 37 points, which seats them 15 points behind fourth-place Baldwin Wallace University and six points ahead of seventh-place Muskingum.

Co-regular season champion the University of Mount Union was picked as the preseason favorite behind seven first-place votes and 79 points. Perennial NCAA Tournament participant Marietta College was selected to finish second behind 67 points and one first-place vote. John Carroll University rounded out the top three teams, taking in the final two remaining first-place votes and 64 total points.

Last year, OAC Tournament Champion Baldwin Wallace University, Marietta, and Capital advanced to 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament and won at least one game. The Crusaders finished last year nationally-ranked and posted its best season in nearly a decade behind a 21-8 overall record, 14-4 OAC ledger, and a share of the regular season championship.

The Crusaders will begin its title defense on Friday, November 15 with a busy weekend that features two games and serving as co-host of the inaugural Capital Tipoff Classic. CU will open the season against Trine University (Ind.) at 8 p.m. on the 15th and then return the following day to host Albion College on Saturday, November 16, for a 6 p.m. affair.
