COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Men's Basketball's magical season continued in style on Saturday as the team put on another offensive clinic in a 98-85 win over the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks. The Ohio Athletic Conference-leading Crusaders are now 8-0 in conference play and 13-2 overall.
The Crusaders were lethal in the first half and scored 61 points in the opening 20 minutes while shooting 21-of-31 from the floor, including 8-for-14 from behind the arc and 11-of-14 from the free throw line. After a hotly-contested first seven minutes, Capital led 21-19 after a made basket by John Carroll. The Crusaders then exploded for 26 unanswered points, a run that effectively ended the game over the next eight minutes.
The run began with a made 3-pointer from Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville) followed by a free throw and layup from Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio/Milford). Auble then connected on another triple to give Capital a 30-19 lead, its first double-digit lead of the day, with 11:13 left to play in the half.
A pair of made free throws and a layup from Joe Hartmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) further increased the Crusader lead. The next basket came off the hands of Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), the senior guard who entered the day just 27 points shy of 1,000 career points, with a triple. Hannah pushed the lead to 20 with a layup that made it 39-19. Weingartner knocked down another long-range shot and Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) scored five points to cap off the run at 49-21.
Greg Parella scored John Carroll's first basket in more than seven and a half minutes with 5:22 left in the first half. Capital's offense showed no signs of slowing down as the Crusaders went into the break up 61-36. Schreck and Hannah each scored 13 points in the first half and Hannah contributed with six assists as well.
The second half began just as the first one ended with back-to-back triples from Weingartner and a score from Cameron Caldwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South). The Blue Streaks did a better job of matching the Crusaders in the second half though and after the Crusaders went up 71-41, John Carroll trimmed the lead to just 10 with a 28-11 run that made the score 82-72. Capital then responded with four unanswered points but back-to-back triples from JCU cut Capital's lead to eight with 5:18 left to play.
The Blue Streak run proved to be too little at too late of a stage though for John Carroll to overcome Capital's lead.
All five of Capital's starters scored in double figures with Schreck leading the way with 19. Schreck rounded out his line with six rebounds and five assists and Hannah added five rebounds and seven assists to go with his 13 points. Cox finished with another double-double of 15 points and 13 boards and Caldwell scored 16. Weingartner matched Schreck's team-high 19 points and is now only eight points shy of the 1,000 point career milestone. Jackson Sartain scored a game-high 30 points for John Carroll.
As a team, the Crusaders shot 33-of-60 from the field for a 55 percent shooting performance and went 11-of 22 from deep. Capital held the edge in rebounds (36-28), turnovers (9-11), points off of turnovers (17-11), second-chance points (14-5) and points in the paint (40-34).
The win was Capital's 12th consecutive victory, breaking a tie with the 2008-09 Crusaders who also had an 11-game winning streak. If Capital can manage to win its next four, it will tie the 2001-02 Crusaders with a program-record 16 straight wins.
Capital will be on the road for its next two contests, first at Heidelberg University on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and then at Ohio Northern University on Jan. 19. Tip off between the Crusaders and Heidelberg is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
