GRANVILLE, Ohio – With four players in double-digits, Capital University Men's Basketball kept the Denison University Big Red guessing on offense all night and finished Capital's three-game streak of road contests with a 76-69 win Tuesday night.
Starting his first game of the season, junior guard Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio/Milford) made an immediate impact by scoring the game's first two points and assisting on Capital's second basket. Three minutes later, Hannah hit a three-pointer that put Capital up 9-2. A Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) layup made it 11-2 but after that, Denison went on a 20-4 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Crusaders eventually battled back to tie the game but a Big Red three just before the half gave Denison a 37-34 lead at the break.
In the second half, Capital's offense came out firing and the Crusaders took a 46-43 lead after an Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) and-one. Capital didn't trail again in the game.
Schreck scored 10 of his 14 points in the second frame and Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) scored 12 of his 17 total points after the break. As a team, Capital outscored Denison 42-32 in the second half. Capital's offensive aggressiveness paid off with 11 trips to the free-throw line and the Crusaders converted seven.
As Capital's offense sparked in the second, so did its defense. The Crusaders forced 10 Big Red turnovers in the final 20 minutes alone and forced Denison to give the ball up 18 times in the game. Capital only committed eight turnovers.
Hannah finished with a team-high 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from downtown. Hannah also handed out four helpers, corralled four rebounds and had three steals. Cox finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth double-double in a row. Jack Coulter tied Hannah for the game high in points with 19 off the Denison bench.
Capital with return to the Capital Center on Saturday afternoon to take on Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Baldwin Wallace University. Tipp-off for that matchup is scheduled for 2 p.m.
