Capital Falls in Overtime Thriller to Close Out Season

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team took to the road for the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, as they battled the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders. Joey Weingartner had a career-high 26 points in the 95-89 loss.

Cap started the game fast. Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) made back-to-back 3-pointers on Cap's 6-2 run. After Mount Union's DeAllen Jackson hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, 6-5, Tyrel Jackson hit another shot from behind the arc to put Capital back up by four, 9-5, with 16:20 left in the half.

The Purple Raiders answered with a long range shot to cut the lead back to one, 9-8. Sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) made a layup to extend the Cap lead to three. After a layup by Mount Union's Mason Thomas cut the lead to one, freshman Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/ Brecksville) drained a 3-ball to put Cap back up by four, 14-10, with 15:06 left in the first half.

Mount went on a 9-2 run which gave them a 19-16 lead with 11:34 left on the clock.

Freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) made a layup to pull Capital within one, 19-18.

The Purple Raiders scored four consecutive points to extend their lead to 23-18 with 8:35 left in the half. The Crusaders battled back and went on a 9-2 run to regain the lead, 27-25. DeAllen Jackson made two free throws after being fouled to tie the game up, 27-27, with 5:02 left.

Schreck made a layup to put Capital back on top, 29-27. After Thomas converted 1-of-2 free throws for the Purple Raiders, sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville) connected on a long range shot to put Cap up by four, 32-28.

Mount Union closed the first half by outscoring Capital 9-6 and cut the Cap lead to one, 38-37.

Tyrel Jackson paved the way for the Crusaders with 13 points at the break. Jamison grabbed a half-high four rebounds.

Capital scored on the opening possession in the second half when freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) found a cutting Schreck for the layup.

The Purple Raiders scored six unanswered points and took a 43-40 lead before Tyrel Jackson drained a shot from downtown to tie the game at 43-43 with 17:02 left in the second half. After a basket by Mount, Weingartner hit back-to-back shots from behind the arc to put Capital back on top 49-45.

Mount Union scored four consecutive points to tie the game at 49 all with 11:51 left in regulation. The Crusaders countered with four points to regain a four-point lead, 53-49. The Purple Raiders matched Cap's four points with four of their own to tie the game back up, 53-53.

Sophomore Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Oak Hills) was sent to the charity stripe where he converted on both of his free-throw attempts to put Capital up 55-53.

A Jeff Foreman 3-pointer put Mount up 56-55 with 8:55 left in regulation.

Tyrel Jackson made a shot from long range and was followed by a jumper by Weingartner to put Cap back up by four, 60-56.

Mount Union went on a 9-4 run and regained the lead, 65-64. After Jamison made 1-of-2 free-throw attempts, the Purple Raiders scored six unanswered points to take a 71-65 with just under three minutes left in regulation.

Capital then scored nine points, all coming from shots from downtown. Weingartner, Auble and Tyrel Jackson each counted for one 3-ball. Capital was down by one with 17 seconds left when Schreck was fouled hard on a rebound sending him to the free-throw line. He made the first free throw to tie the game at 75 all, but missed the second attempt. Schreck then stole the Mount inbound pass and got a shot off that hit the side of the rim from half court, sending the game into overtime.

Weingartner found Jamison for a layup to put Cap up 77-75 with just over four minutes left in overtime. After two free throws by the Purple Raiders, Weingartner sank a jumper to put Capital back up by two, 79-77.

Five unanswered points by Mount Union gave them an 82-79 lead. Weingartner was fouled and sent to the free-throw line where he made both of his attempts to pull Cap within one, 82-81.

The Purple Raiders went on a 10-2 run to make their lead 92-83 with 20 seconds left in overtime. Capital did not give up and outscored Mount 6-3 to close out the game, which made the final score 95-89.

Mount Union had the upper hand in points off turnovers, 11-7, and points in the paint, 44-24. Mount's bench outscored Cap's bench 35-28. DeAllen Jackson led the way for Mount with 17 points. Tommy Stenger, Andrew Francesconi, Mile Girffin, and Thomas Mason all scored double-digits.

Capital outrebounded Mount, 36-34. Cap held the margin in second-chance points, 19-10. Weingartner went for a game-high 26 points while adding two assists and one rebound. Jackson finished his career in the Purple and White scoring 25 points. He grabbed three rebounds and had one assist. Schreck tallied 18 points, recorded a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and one steal.

With the loss Capital finished the season 13-13. Mount Union will travel to top-seeded Marietta College on Thursday night in Marietta, Ohio.
