Schreck Goes for Career-High 24 and Gets a Steal to Seal the Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team took to the road for the regular season finale against the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. Cap ends the regular season by knocking off John Carroll, 76-75. Schreck went for a career-high 24 points.

With nine seconds on the clock, JCU called a time out. After inbounding the ball, sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) came up with a huge steal as he stripped David Linane with two seconds left to seal the victory for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders started the game fast by going on a 15-4 run. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) led Cap during the run with five points.

John Carroll scored four consecutive points which cut the Capital lead to 15-8. Freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) secured an offensive rebound and made a layup to stop the JCU run. The Blue Streaks' Linane made a 3-point shot to pull JCU within six, 17-11. Schreck made a layup to extend Cap's lead, 19-11, with 13:51 left in the first half.

John Carroll went on a brief 5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-16. Freshman Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/ Brecksville) drained a 3-pointer to put Capital up by six with 12:05 left in the stanza. Doug Caputo of JCU made a layup, but Schreck made a layup on the other end to keep the Cap advantage 24-18.

The Blue Streaks went on a 12-2 run that took the clock down to 8:44 and gave JCU its first lead of the game, 30-26.

Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) sank a jumper to stop the John Carroll run and cut the lead to two, 30-28. JCU answered the layup by going on a 9-0 run to make the score 39-28 with just over six minutes left in the half.

The Crusaders battled back and went on a 12-1 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 2:01 left until halftime. Sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville) led Cap during the run with six points on two 3-point shots. Jackson and Auble joined on the 3-ball action as each hit a 3-pointer during the run. Capital closed the half out as it went on a 7-2 run, to take a 47-42 lead at the break.

In the first half Auble led Capital with 11 points and Schreck added 10 points.  As a team, Cap shot 77.8 percent from behind the arc. The Crusaders defense was strong and held JCU under 50 percent from the field as well as from long range.

JCU started the second half by going on a 8-2 run which gave John Carroll a 50-49 lead with 15:48 remaining in the game. Cap responded with a layup by Schreck and a 3-ball from Auble as Cap regained the lead 54-50.

The Blue Streaks scored four unanswered points before Weingartner hit a jumper and was fouled. Weingartner converted the and-1 opportunity to break the tie and put Capital up 57-54 with 13:18 left in the game. Three consecutive layups put John Carroll up by three, 60-57.

Schreck made a layup before Jackson drained a shot from behind the arc to put Cap back on top 62-60 with 10:42 left in regulation. Schreck was fouled and went to the charity stripe where he sank both free throws, to give Capital a 64-60 lead. After a made free throw by John Carroll, Auble hit a jumper to expand the Cap lead to 66-61 with 9:16 left in regulation.

The Blue Streaks went on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to just one point, 68-67. Weingartner sank a jump shot to put Capital up by three, 70-67. Sean Flannery for John Carroll converted two free throws after being fouled to make the score 70-69. The Blue Streaks' John Cirillo was fouled and sent to the charity stripe where he made two free throws to put JCU on top 71-70 with 4:55 left in the game.

Schreck made a layup off of an offensive rebound and put Capital back on top 72-71. Jamison was fouled and sent to the free-throw line for two shots. He converted both shots to put Cap up 74-71 with 2:55 left on the clock.

Doug Caputo for JCU was fouled and made 1-of-2 shots. Linane hit a 3-pointer to put John Carroll up 75-74 with 1:35 left in regulation.

With just under a minute left on the clock, sophomore Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio/ Milford) connected with a cutting Schreck for a layup to give Capital a 76-75 lead. Schreck was not done there. As the Blue Steaks tried to set up a last-second shot, Schreck stole the ball from Linane to solidify the Crusader victory, 76-75.

John Carroll held the advantage in rebounds, 40-25, points off turnovers, 20-16, second-chance points, 18-4, as well as bench points, 36-16. Linane finished with a team-high 21 points. Cirillo went for 16 points.

The Crusaders used their drive and determination on the defensive end to help come away with a victory. Schreck went for a game-high 24 points. Auble set a new career-high with 16 points. Weingartner supplied 13 points off of the bench and Jackson tallied 11 points. Jamison led Capital with seven rebounds.

With the win, Cap improves to 13-12 overall and 8-10 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the first round of the OAC tournament. Capital will be on the road regardless of who it plays, but seeding has yet to be finalized.
