Boone Leads Cap into Pioneer Territory, but Cap Falls to No. 10 Marietta

 The Capital University men's basketball team was in action Wednesday night as it traveled to No. 10 Marietta College to battle the Pioneers. Nate Boone led Cap with a career-high 16 points in the 94-78 loss.

The Crusaders started the game strong with an 8-3 run. Sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) finished off the run converting on an and-1 opportunity.

After a Pioneers layup by Keith Richardson, Capital went on an 8-2 run. During the run, freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) made a 3-point shot. Sophomore Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Oak Hills) made a layup while being fouled. Cox converted the three-point play by making the free throw.

Marietta responded to the two Cap runs by going on a 15-4 run. The Pioneers were led by Dillon Young with eight points, which gave them a 22-20 lead.

Freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) connected on a jumper to tie the game at 22-22 with 8:30 left in the half.

Young made another 3-point basket before freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky./ Wesley Christian) collected an offensive rebound and made a layup to pull Cap within one, 25-24.

The Pioneers responded with a 13-3 run that lasted 2:51 and extended their lead to 38-27 with 4:37 left in first stanza.

Boone sank a jumper to cut the Marietta lead to 38-29. After a Pioneer made layup, freshman Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/ Brecksville) made a layup to cut the lead back to nine points.

Marietta then went on an 8-2 run which took 1:41 off of the clock. With 32 seconds left in the first half, Yahaya made an athletic play by stripping the Pioneer player and streaking down the court for a fast-break layup, making the score 48-35 at the half in favor of Marietta.

In the first half Boone led Capital with 12 points. Jamison recorded the only two blocks in the half by either team.

The Pioneers started the second half strong with a 17-7 run and extended their lead to 65-42 with 15:59 left in regulation.

With 15:42 left in the game, senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) led Capital's 8-2 run with four points. The run cut Marietta's lead to 67-50 with 13:16 left on the clock.

Marietta extended its lead to 80-59 after the two teams exchanged 22 points in a span of 5:07. During that span the Pioneers outscored Capital 13-9.

After a Schreck layup made the score 84-61, Yahaya took over for the Crusaders scoring six consecutive points, including a shot from behind the arc, which made the score 86-67. During the run, Richardson made two free throws for the Pioneers.

After Caleb Hoyng made two free throws for Marietta, sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville) connected with a shot from long range that made the score 88-70 with 4:40 remaining in regulation.

A.J. Edwards made a free throw to extend the Marietta lead to 89-70. Sophomore Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio/ Milford) and freshman Brandon Holaday (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Turpin) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Pioneer lead to 89-76 with 2:30 remaining.

Marietta scored five unanswered points before Hannah made a layup with 10 seconds left on the clock. The final score was 94-78 in favor of the Pioneers.

Marietta finished the game with advantages in rebounds 34-27, points off turnovers 13-12 and fast-break points 6-2. Young finished with a game-high 25 points. Anthony Wallace had 18 points, while Richardson and Edwards contributed 15 points and 12 points, respectively.

For Capital, Boone paved the way with 16 points. Schreck went for 12 points, while Jackson chipped in with 11 points. Yahaya tallied 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for Cap. Yahaya led Capital with six rebounds and three steals. The Crusaders bench outscored the Pioneers bench 31-20. Capital held a decent margin in points in the paint, 43-28.

Cap falls to 11-11 overall and 6-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders return to the Capital Center on Saturday as they host the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University. The tip is scheduled for 2p.m. and will be senior day as well as 90's Night.
