Cap Drops One to Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team was in action Saturday afternoon as they took on the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. Austin Schreck and Nate Boone tied for a team-high 14 points, in the 91-70 loss.

The Purple Raiders came out of the gate shooting and started the game on a 17-3 run that took off 5:48.

Sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville), hit a jumper to stop the Mount Union run. After two Purple Raiders free throws, sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) dished the rock out to Weingartner who connected on a long range shot to make the score 19-8 with 13:09 left in the first half.

Freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky./ Wesley Christian) caught a pass from freshman Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio/ Brecksville) and scored on a layup, to cut the Purple Raiders lead to nine, 19-10.

Mount Union went on a 16-2 run that lasted 3:40 and extended its lead to 35-12 with 7:35 left in the half.

Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) took a 3-point shot and managed to get the shot to fall, despite being fouled on the attempt. Jackson went to the charity stripe where he converted an unconventional four-point play, which made the score 35-16.

The Purple Raiders made a 3-pointer, before Capital went on a fast 6-3 run. During the run, freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) scored four points.

Mount Union and Cap traded two-point baskets, before Tommy Stenger scored five unanswered points for the Purple Raiders and extended their lead to 48-24 with 2:34 left until halftime.

The Crusaders battled back and went on an 11-4 run that lasted 1:41. Jackson sank two shots from behind the arc as well as a free throw during the run.

Stenger hit a 3-point shot with seven seconds left in the half to extend the Purple Raiders lead to 55-35 heading into intermission.

Mount Union started the second half with a 12-6 run and extended the margin to 67-42 with 15:58 left in the game.

Auble connected on a long range jumper to cut the lead to 67-45, however the Purple Raiders responded with a five unanswered points and extended their lead to 72-45.

Capital clawed back with a 9-4 run, led by Boone with seven points. Cap trailed 75-54.

Just before the eight-minute mark, Schreck and DeAllen Jackson, of Mount Union, traded baskets. Schreck gave Cap a slight 5-4 edge during the tradeoff.

In the final six minutes of regulation, the Purple Raiders outscored Cap 12-11, which made the final score 91-70.

For the game, Mount Union shot 60.4 percent from the field and 59.1 percent from long range. Stenger finished with a game-high 25 points, all of which came in the first half after he shot 90 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from 3-point range. D'Vontay Friga added 15 points and DeAllen Jackson chipped in with 12 points.

The Crusaders finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and from behind the arc. Boone and Schreck each finished with 14 points. Weingartner tallied 12 points, while Tyrel Jackson contributed 11 points.

Capital falls to 11-10 overall and 6-8 in Ohio Athletic Conference action. The Crusaders return to the hardwood Wednesday as they travel to Marietta, Ohio, for a matchup with the Marietta Pioneers. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
