NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team took to the road to battle the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University in New Concord. Joey Weingartner led the way for Cap with 14 points in the 77-67 loss.
Both teams started the game missing their first few shot attempts. With 17:42 on the clock, freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio/ Strongsville) rejected a layup attempt from Muskingum's Joshua Keyes. Jamison then made a jump shot assisted by senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman), which gave Capital an early 2-0 lead.
The Fighting Muskies responded with a quick 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead before freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky./ Wesley Christian) made a layup to cut the lead to 5-4.
After a Joshua Glass made 3-point attempt, sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville) matched Glass with a 3-point shot of his own, cutting the lead to 8-7.
Muskingum went on a 10-5 run that took 3:56 off of the clock and extended its lead to 18-12.
In the span of 1:17, both teams combined for 11 points without a miss. Yahaya, Weingartner and sophomore Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Oak Hills) accounted for six points. Keyes and Marcus Dempsey scored five points for Muskingum. The Fighting Muskies held a 23-18 lead.
After six unanswered points by Muskingum, sophomore Will Hannah (Milford, Ohio. Milford) and Weingartner made back-to-back shots from long range to cut the Muskies lead to 29-24. Jarrell Marsh made a jump to extend the Muskingum lead to 31-24.
Sophomore Gavin Wildermuth (Botkins, Ohio/ Jackson Center) and Hannah both scored two points to cut the Fighting Muskies lead to 31-28.
Muskingum ended the final 4:00 on a 12-5 run, which gave them a 43-33 lead heading into halftime.
Weingartner finished the first half with 10 points and added an assist. Jamison and Yahaya both brought down three boards.
Rickey Wilson started the scoring for the second half by making 2-of-3 free-throw attempts to extend the Muskies lead to 45-33.
Sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe after being fouled. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) added a 3-ball, which made the score 45-37.
With 18:22 left in regulation, the Fighting Muskies went on a 10-4 that lasted 5:46 and made the score 55-41.
The Crusaders did not give up and answered with a 10-5 run led by Weingartner with four points. Yahaya and Jackson both drained shots from behind the arc. Cap cut the Muskingum lead to 60-51.
Junior Brennan Czuchran (Rayland, Ohio/ Buckeye Local) made a 3-point basket after a Dempsey layup.
Capital and Muskingum traded layups, before the Muskies scored five unanswered points, which made the score 69-56.
The Crusaders battled back and cut the Fighting Muskies' lead to 71-67 after going on an 11-2 run. During the run, Jackson and Schreck combined for nine points, five and four respectively.
Muskingum compiled the final six points of the game to make the final score 77-67.
For the game, both teams grabbed 35 rebounds each. The Muskies held the advantages in points off turnovers, 23-11, and second chance points, 14-9.
The Capital bench outscored the Muskingum bench, 44-12. Cap also held a slim margin in assists, 15-14. The Crusaders defense held the Muskies to just 27.3 percent from behind the arc while Muskingum has averaged 35.2 on the season.
Marsh recorded a game-high 19 points for the Fighting Muskies. Dempsey tabbed 18 points. Keyes achieved a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Weingartner led Cap with 14 points and Yahaya chipped in with 11 points, both coming off of the bench. Jamison had a big game on the defensive glass accounting for eight of his 11 rebounds.
Capital falls to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in the Ohio Athletics Conference. The Crusaders return to action Saturday as they play host to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
