Cap Falls to No. 23 Marietta, Despite a Career-High from Boone

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team hosted the Pioneers of Marietta College Wednesday night at the Capital Center. Nate Boone had a career-high 13 points in the 78-65 loss.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Capital responded with a 7-0 run, led by Sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky./ Dixie Heights) with four points. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) nailed a 3-point basket, which cut the Marietta lead to 9-7 with 11:55 left in the first half.

After the Pioneers added four more points, freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky./ Wesley Christian) made a jump shot to stop the Marietta run. The Pioneers scored four more points before sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio/ Centerville) made back-to-back jump shots to keep the Crusaders within four, 17-13.

Marietta then went on a 14-4 run that lasted 2:43 and extended its lead to 31-17.

Capital closed out the half on a 10-4 run, led by sophomore Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Oak Hills) with the final six points of the half.

Cox and Schreck led the team with six points each for the first half. Schreck had a half-high five rebounds, four of which were defensive. Cox brought down four rebounds. Capital's defense held the Pioneers to just 3-13 from long range.

The Crusaders started the second half the way they ended the first half. Cap opened the half with the first five points and cut Marietta's lead to just three points, 35-32.

The Pioneers came back with a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 40-32. Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) hit his second 3-pointer of the half to cut the lead to five, 40-35.

After a made jump shot by Marietta's Dillon Young, Yahaya drained a 3-ball to cut the lead to 42-38.

The Pioneers answered with an 18-5 run that lasted 5:38. A.J. Edwards led the way with eight points during the run.

Capital would not quit and went on a 9-4 run that took 2:37 off of the clock. Weingartner had five of the nine points.

After a made 3-point shot by the Pioneers' Anthony Wallace, Boone started to get hot. Boone scored eight consecutive points, six of which came from behind the arc. Jackson added a 3-pointer of his own that cut the Marietta led to 69-63 with 4:51 left in regulation.

Marietta ended the game by going on a 9-2 run, making the final score 78-65.

For the game, the Pioneers held the advantage in rebounds (43-37), points off turnovers (18-4), second chance points (9-7), points in the paint (44-24), and fast-break points (6-2). Edwards finished with a game-high 25 points. Keith Richardson chipped in with 16 points. Wallace tallied 10 points.

Capital had the better bench tonight, outscoring Marietta 26-12. Cap was led by Boone with 13 points. He also brought down four rebounds, recorded a steal, and assisted on a basket. Jackson scored all 12 of his points in the second half. He tabbed five rebounds and two assists. The Capital defense came up with five blocks.

With the loss, Cap falls to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Crusaders take to the road as they travel to Westerville, Ohio to battle rival Otterbein University on Saturday. The tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and follows the women's game. Come support both teams as we try to Occupy Otterbein.
