Cox Has Career Day in the Loss to JCU

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team took to the hardwood against the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University in the Capital Center Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Caleb Cox achieved his first career double-double by setting career-highs with 30 points and 11 rebounds, in the 102-93 loss.

The Blue Streaks opened the game with an 11-2 run that spanned the first 2:28. David Linane, Jr. scored five of the team's 11.

After a JCU 3-point basket by John Cirillo, Cap went on an 8-0 run to cut the John Carroll lead to 14-10 with 15:25 remaining in the first half.

Freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky. / Wesley Christian) made a layup to cut the Blue Streaks' lead to 16-13.

JCU answered with an 11-3 run that last lasted 4:55 and extended its lead to 27-16.

Sophomore Caleb Cox (Cincinnati, Ohio / Oak Hills) made two free throws, after being fouled by the John Carroll defender. Sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) added a 3-pointer to cut the Blue Streaks lead to 27-21.

JCU answered with five points to extend its lead to 32-21. The Crusaders went on a 10-4 run which lasted 2:22 and cut the John Carroll lead to 36-34. Weingartner scored four of the 10 points.

With just under a minute left to play in the first half, Linane recorded a steal which looked like it was going to be an easy two points for him on the fast break. Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Coffman) would not allow that to happen as he ran down Linane and blocked his layup attempt.

John Carroll took a 50-38 lead into halftime.

In the first half, Cox led Capital with 10 points and seven rebounds. Weingartner added nine points off of the bench. Cap held JCU to shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc for the half.

The Crusaders started the second half by going on an 11-5 run, in which Cox scored seven, to cut the JCU lead to 55-49. After the two teams traded layups, John Carroll went on a 12-4 run that lasted 3:26 and lengthened its lead to 69-55.

John Cirillo made a jump shot with 8:34 left in the game to extend JCU's lead to 79-65. Capital bounced back with a 21-10 run that took 3:45 and cut the Blue Streaks' lead to just three points, 87-84. During the span, Weingartner tallied eight points, while Jackson and Cox chipped in with four each.

John Carroll ended the game by going on a 13-9 run, for a final score of 102-93.

Cox recorded his first career double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds, both career-highs. Weingartner finished second to his teammate with a new career-high, 24 points. Jackson finished in double-digits points with 10.

JCU had five players that recorded double-digit points. Ryan Berger led the team with 23, Cirillo added 20, Linane tabbed 17, Simon Kucharewicz chipped in with 13 and Antonio Vuyancih totaled 12.

JCU held a slight edge in rebounds 35-32 and outscored Cap 42-30 in the paint. John Carroll had the advantage 15-6 in second chance points as well as points off turnovers 24-12.

Capital notched a few more fast-break points than the Blue Streaks, 8-2 and had a commanding influence off of the bench by outscoring JCU, 72-46.

Cap falls to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Crusaders return to action Wednesday as they travel to Tiffin, Ohio, to battle the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
