COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team took to the hardwood in the Ohio Athletic Conference home opener against Muskingum University. A monster second half propelled Cap to an 86-68 victory. Schreck led Capital with a career night scoring 20 points and bringing down 16 rebounds.
Sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky.) picked up his first career double-double with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Both teams came out shooting, making 10 of the first 13 shots combined, in the first three and a half minutes.
The Fighting Muskies held a seven-point lead, 26-19, with 8:56 left in the first half.
The Crusaders cut the lead to 30-27 with 3:59 left in the first half, after Schreck (Erlanger, Ky.) hit a 3-point shot.
Muskingum's Jarrell Marsh scored six consecutive points, making a 3-point basket and going 3-for-3 after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, which extended the Fighting Muskie lead to 36-27.
The Crusaders ended the first half by going on a 6-3 run, to cut the Muskingum lead to 39-33 at the half.
After being outscored 39-33 in the first half, the Crusaders answered with a monster second half, outscoring Muskingum 53-29, including two 16-2 runs.
Schreck led Cap at the break with eight points and three rebounds. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) tallied seven points in the first half. Freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio) contributed with four points and three rebounds.
After Marsh made a layup to extend the Muskingum lead to 49-40, Capital went on a 16-2 run. The run lasted three minutes and four seconds. During the run, senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) scored eight points including two 3-pointers, while he shot 3-for-3 from the field. Schreck tabbed five points during the run. Cap led 56-51.
With 11:02 left in the game, the Fighting Muskies tied the game 56-56.
The Crusaders responded with another 16-2 run that lasted five minutes and 17 seconds. Capital led 72-58. Sophomore Joey Weingartner (Centerville, Ohio) accounted for eight of Cap's 16 points. Freshman Dan Auble (Brecksville, Ohio) added five points.
Capital finished the game with a 12-5 run, to make the final 86-68.
Schreck finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds, both marks are career-highs, and assisted on three baskets. Jackson accumulated 15 points, brought down five boards, and contributed on three buckets. Weingartner compiled 14 points, three rebounds and two assists.
For the Fighting Muskies, Marsh led all scoring with 22 points. Marcus Dempsey tabbed 13 points.
After Muskingum shot 50 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range in the first half, Cap held the Fighting Muskies to just 33.3 percent and 30 percent from long range. The Capital defense has been staunch all season holding opponents to 37.7 percent from the field and 31.6 from behind the arc.
Cap was stalwart on the defensive glass with 32 rebounds off of missed Muskingum shots. Capital held a 42-37 advantage in rebounding.
The Crusaders forced 21 turnovers and converted those turnovers into 23 points. Cap showed dominance with 42 points in the paint, compared to 14 from Muskingum. Capital had the upper hand, 21-11 in bench points.
With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in OAC play. Capital returns to action Saturday, Dec. 10, as they host rival Otterbein University at 1 p.m. Saturday is a Purple Out!
