Capital Drops OAC Opener to Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball took to the road on Saturday afternoon for the Ohio Athletic Conference opener against Ohio Northern University. Tyrel Jackson led Capital with 17 points and seven rebounds in the 87-65 loss.

At 11:22 the Polar Bears held a 16-11 lead. After a timeout, Capital went on an 8-0 run. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) started the run with a layup. Senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) scored the next four Capital points with two free throws and a jump shot. After a blocked shot by Boone, Jackson found freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky.) for a fast break jam, giving Cap a 19-16 lead.

Jackson accounted for the last four points in the half, with two more free throws and a jumper. Capital took a 37-33 lead into the half.

Capital came out fast in the second half with a 10-1 run to extend its lead 47-34. 

Ohio Northern answered by going on a 24-10 run, in a span of 7:50. After a sophomore Austin Schreck (Erlanger, Ky.) layup cut the ONU lead to 58-57, the Polar Bears went on an 18-3 run which took 4:29 off of the clock.

Sophomore Gavin Wildermuth (Botkins, Ohio) made a jump shot with 16 seconds left on the clock to make the final score 87-65.

For the game, Jackson led the Crusaders in points and rebounds, 17 and seven respectively. Schreck added 11 points with six rebounds. Senior Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio) finished with 10 points to give Capital a total of three starters with double-digit points.

ONU's Devon Allen recorded a game-high 21 points. The Polar Bears had all five starters with 10 or more points. Thress had 18, Baker tallied 18, Bruns and Burger added 13 points each.

As a team, Capital held an 11-7 advantage in bench points. The Crusaders outrebounded the Polar Bears 35-29. Cap had a four-point edge in fast-break points, 10-6.

Despite being outrebounded for the game, Ohio Northern produced nine more second chance points, 19-10. The Polar Bears had a large advantage with 25 points off turnovers, compared to Capital's seven.

With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in OAC play. Capital returns home for the first conference home matchup against the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8.
