Crusaders Tame Cougars in Blowout Fashion

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Capital University men's basketball team was in action Friday night as they took on Chatham University. Cap was led by Tyrel Jackson with 22 points.

Capital started the game by going on a 13-0 run. Cap held Chatham scoreless for first five minutes of the game.

In the first half, senior Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Coffman) led all scoring with 10 points and added three rebounds. Freshman Tyler Jamison (Strongsville, Ohio) secured seven rebounds to lead the half and added eight points. Freshman Ganiyu Yahaya (Allen, Ky.) added eight points off of the bench for the Crusaders.

The Cap defense was stout by holding the Cougar offense to just 35.7 percent from the field and just 28.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc. Capital had the edge in rebounds, 21-16. Cap took a 38-27 lead into halftime.

The second half started similar to the first, as Capital went on a 10-2 run. Freshman Nate Boone (Columbus, Ohio/ Bishop Watterson) scored six of the teams 10. After two made free throws by Chatham, Cap went on a 9-2 run that featured four different Crusaders contributing.

The Crusaders offense for the second straight game shot better than 59 percent from the field. Tonight Cap shot 60 percent. The Capital defense was a focal point coming into the season and has looked mighty impressive in the first two games. Cap has held opponents to shooting just 28.2 percent from the field and 16.4 percent from 3-point range. In the two games, Capital has outrebounded the opposition 99-55 and has forced 12 turnovers per game.

Jackson led all scoring with 22 points while shooting lights out from the field with a shooting percentage of 90. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Jamison recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Yahaya proved to be a big factor coming off the bench once again adding 15 points while shooting 87.5 percent from the field and going 1-for-1 from long range.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-0 on the season. Capital returns to action again in Pittsburgh, Pa., as they take on the Redhawks of La Roche College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
