Balanced Attack Sends Crusaders to Victory

The Capital University men's basketball team recovered nicely from a heartbreaking double-overtime loss the night before with a 76-58 win over Piedmont (Ga.) Wednesday on the second day of the Don Lane Classic at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Crusaders (4-6 overall), who shot 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the floor and knocked down eight 3-pointers.

Capital held the Lions (4-4) to just 39.6 percent shooting and scored 21 points off 19 Piedmont turnovers.

Freshman guard Tyrel Jackson (Dublin, Ohio) led the balanced effort with 14 points for Capital, which stormed back in regulation of last night's game against Maryville (Tenn.) only to be outlasted 109-102 in double overtime.

Following play, Jackson was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 14.5 points per game in the two contests.

Senior forward Ben Jackson (Columbus, Ohio), junior forward Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) and sophomore guard AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio) tallied 13 points apiece. Bolka, who posted his fourth straight game scoring 10 or more points, led the Crusaders with seven rebounds.

Junior wing Mike Augustine (Lexington, Ohio) totaled 10 points and five rebounds.

Capital never trailed from the opening tip, grabbing a quick 9-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest. The Crusaders extended their lead to 23-12 midway through the half on a 3-pointer by junior guard Adam Blake (Kingston, Ohio), then kept increasing the advantage as the half went on. A free throw by Bolka capped the first-period scoring effort and Capital led 44-20 heading into the locker room.

The Crusaders' lead swelled to 30 by the 12:34 mark of the second half after a 3-pointer by Augustine. Capital trailed by no less than 18 in the frame to claim a win in its regular season non-conference finale.

The Crusaders return to Ohio Athletic Conference play for the remainder of the regular season on Jan. 6 against Mount Union. Tip-off at the Capital Center is slated for 7 p.m.
