English’s Big Game Translates to Defensive Player of the Week Accolade

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Capital University senior Chuck English has steadily improved with an increase in reps over the last few weeks, and it has paid off in his first career weekly honor as a football player. On Monday afternoon, the Ohio Athletic Conference announced that English was the conference's selection for Defensive Player of the Week.

English, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, had his best game of the season in a 42-41 double overtime win against Baldwin Wallace, last week. In that game, the St. Xavier High School product finished with eight tackles (two solo), one sack, two pass break ups, and an interception that was returned 98 yards for a touchdown, which tied the game at 21-21. The pick six was the first for a Capital player since the 2014 season and ties for the second-longest interception return in program history.

What is not reflected in the stat sheet is his fumble recovery that ended the game on its final play. Baldwin Wallace elected to go for the two-point conversion to end the game, but J.R. Garrigo and Derek Eibon forced a fumble on the last play and English was the Cap player to coral the loose ball, giving Capital the win.

For English, this is his first Player of the Week honor. He is also up for Hero of the Week accolades, sponsored by HERO Sports. Click here to vote for English to become the D3 Football Week 9 HERO of the Week.
