COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Football has selected its captains for the 2016 season. Leading the charge on Saturdays will be senior Tyler Conner, and juniors Chase Longwell, Cory Heeter, and Shawn Facione.
The announcement comes after a team vote held Monday indicated the Crusader foursome was selected to lead the team this upcoming season.
Conner, a Grove City, Ohio native, returns as the team's top defensive lineman after racking up 36 tackles, one sack, four tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in 10 games played. He is a two-time letterwinner and 2015 Academic All-OAC selection.
Conner will join fellow number 13, Cory Heeter (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm), in captaincy. Heeter has made a position change from slot back to running back, and comes off a season that was shortened due to injury. As a sophomore, he rattled off 161 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He was also an academic all-conference selection, that year. His freshman season has proven to be his best, where he put up 299 yards on the ground and also 380 yards in the kick return game.
A product of Marion, Ohio and Harding High School, Facione has put together seasons of 30 and 36 tackles, respectively, at two different positions. The junior began his career as a defensive back, but then transitioned into a role on the linebacking corp, last season. He had career games against John Carroll University and Marietta College last year where he put up 10 tackles in each contest.
Longwell will also be facing a position change heading into his junior season. Last year, he missed the season due to injury and only played in two games in 2014 due to the same ailment. He will now strap it up as an H-back in Capital's new pro-style offense.
Capital will take the field to open the 2016 season this Saturday, Sept. 3, in Springfield, Ohio to take on the Wittenberg University Tigers. The Crusaders are coming off of a 3-7 season, but welcome Chad Rogosheske as their new head coach.
