COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University football team suffered a 48-0 loss at the hands of No. 18 John Carroll University, Saturday afternoon. The Blue Streak defense limited the Crusaders to 170 yards of total offense as part of the loss.
One week after putting up 500 yards on the ground alone, Capital (2-5, 2-4 OAC) was held to just 111 rushing yards. Freshman Jonny Eaton (Wapakoneta, Ohio) ran for a team- and career-high 47 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Zak Sheridan (Zanesville, Ohio) led the Crusaders with 19 rush attempts, good for 38 yards and also added 50 through the air.
Sheridan took nearly all the snaps under center until freshman Connor McCloud (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) got his first call to game action in the fourth quarter. There, he completed his first collegiate pass to Jake Skelton on a nine-yard slant route.
Capital's defense was again privy to the big play, allowing seven plays of over 30 yards. Six of those went for touchdowns.
JCU's Ro Golphin went for 178 yards on 16 carries and added a 40-yard scoring reception for a total of 218 total yards and four touchdowns. Marshall Howell caught seven passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Schaefer went 17-for-25 through the air for 331 yards and three scores.
Capital appeared to have John Carroll under control until they ended the first quarter with a 27-yard touchdown pass. They then continued to roll scoring twice more in the second and third quarters. John Carroll (6-1, 5-1 OAC) poured out over 600 yards of total offense.
The Crusaders will play its next two games on the road against Baldwin Wallace University (10/31) and Heidelberg University (11/7).
