COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University football team hosted rival Otterbein University for Homecoming. While a celebration was had with the tying of an all-time program record, the Crusaders lost to the Cardinals, 49-34, at Bernlohr Stadium.

Capital marked up the scoreboard first when the Crusaders scored on its longest play from scrimmage on the season. Senior Wally Brewer (London, Ohio) took off  58-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, giving Capital a 7-0 lead.

The Cardinals would respond a minute later on a John Pyles 10-yard run, finishing a three-play, 48-yard scoring. It was the first of four straight Otterbein scores that turned the tide of the game for good.

The momentum shifted for good in a span of three minutes when Capital was stopped short on a fourth-and-goal opportunity from the one-yard line. After sophomore quarterback Zak Sheridan was turned down at the goal line, Pyles went 99 yards the other way on the Cardinals first play of the drive. Facing a 21-7 deficit, Capital then fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, leading to another Otterbein touchdown and a three-score gap.

The Crusaders would respond with a long drive that went 72 yards on 11 plays. Junior Nick Waters (Hilliard, Ohio) scored from one yard out, making the score 28-14. Otterbein responded with another touchdown, this time through the air, before Capital scored again. Waters added a second touchdown to his line on a 26-yard touchdown run to make the score 35-21.

Both teams battled back and forth with scoring drive to answer one another, but the early breakaway by Otterbein was too much to overcome for Capital.

On the last play of the game sophomore Nick Iske (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) threw a hail mary that was knocked down but kicked back up into the air where senior Zak Wirick (West Liberty, Ohio) made the catch in the endzone, leading to the final score of 49-34.

Capital's Brent Walton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) hit the mark to sit atop the Crusaders' all-time career leading rusher. He needed 23 yards to tie Rayshaun Gales (2000-02) and that is exactly what he ended the day with before exiting the game due to an injury. Walton now has 2,287 yards and needs just one more to sit alone in the top spot.

Sheridan ran for a career-best 119 yards while Waters and Brewer each found the end zone twice, also career highs for each player. Waters finished with 90 yards on 11 carries while Brewer went for 68 yards on four touches. Jake Breakey (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) also came out with a nice performance, going for 51 yards on four carries.

Pyles finished the day with 193 yards on 12 carries, breaking a streak of four straight games the Crusaders held an individual to under 100 yards rushing in a game. Quarterback Kevan Green went 22-for-28 for 245 yards and five touchdowns through the air.

Capital (2-3, 2-2 OAC) will be in action at Ohio Northern University next Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m.
