COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Baseball concluded its 2019 campaign on Sunday with an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Heidelberg University. The Crusaders battled all day but fell in both games, both by final scores of 15-2.
Game 1 – Heidelberg 15, Capital 2
In the first game of the day, the Crusaders kept the Student Princes off the board but after the first inning Heidelberg scored in the remaining eight innings. The Student Princes scored two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. A run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh gave Heidelberg an 11-0 lead before Capital got on the board.
In the bottom of the seventh, Shayne Lyons (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) led off the frame with a walk and then advanced to second on a balk. Lyons then hustled around to score on a single roped to right field by Joe Caporale (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield). The senior infielder then stole second and another balk moved him to third. Freshman catcher Brandon Barnette (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) then skied a ball to center that was caught but was deep enough for Caporale to race home and make the score 11-2.
Heidelberg added two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to claim the win.
Lyons led the Crusaders with two hits. Caporale and Barnette were the only other Capital players to record hits.
Game 2 – Heidelberg 15, Capital 2
After scoring in the final eight innings of the first game, Heidelberg picked the second game up where it left off with a pair of first-inning runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Capital responded quickly with an RBI single from Connor Richardson (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg – Summit) that scored Caporale that cut the Heidelberg lead to one.
In the second though the Student Princes produced their most explosive inning of the day, an eight-run frame that increased their lead to 10-1 and represented their 10th consecutive inning with a run.
After neither team scored in the third, both scored one run in the fourth with Capital's coming on a single from senior Mitchell Bodden (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) that scored Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon). That was all the offense the Crusaders could muster in the game though and Heidelberg completed the sweep.
With the pair of losses, the Crusaders finished their season with an overall record of 11-25 and an OAC record of 6-12. Following the games, Capita; honored the four seniors on this year's roster; Joe Caporale, Mitchell Bodden, Nick Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Alex Muckensturm (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh).
