AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Capital University Baseball has returned from its spring break trip in Florida and for two Crusaders, waiting for them was a conference player of the week award. Beau Otto was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week while Scott Gutstein was named Pitcher of the Week.
Junior Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) played in six of Cap's seven games and in that time lead the team in batting average and was stellar in the field. In six games, Otto went 13-for-25 to hit at a team-leading .520 clip. He had an incredible three-game stretch to end the Crusaders' trip in which he went a combined 10-for-14 (.714), one double, and drove in two of his four RBIs. In the field, Otto made just one error in 18 chances to hold a .947 fielding percentage, primarily from second base.
In two starts, sophomore Scott Gutstein (Cooper City, Fla./NSU University School) eclipsed the number of innings pitched that he had tossed all of his freshman year and he did so with great efficiency. Gutstein posted two quality starts and came away from them with a 1-1 record. In just his second collegiate start, he threw 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs on five hits against Alma College (Mich.). He struck out six Scots in a losing effort, but it set the table for his next start. Gutstein then pitched a complete game as part of a 6-1 win over Louisiana College on the final day of the team's stay, gave up just one run and struck out another six hitters en route to his first win of the season.
This marks the first OAC Player of the Week honor for both players.
