AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Athletic Conference has announced its yearly awards from the 2017 baseball season. Alexander Smith and Brendon Borkey were selected to All-OAC teams representing the Capital University baseball team.
Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) picked up a Second Team All-OAC honor. Smith led the team and finished tied for first in the OAC with four triples. He batted .331 on the season, with 43 hits, 17 RBIs, 11 walks, and 10 doubles in 130 at bats. He added three stolen bases. Defensively Smith recorded eight outfield assists, three of which turned into double plays. Last season, Smith was selected as All-OAC honorable mention. In the series against Otterbein University on April 8, Smith produced a 6-for-8 day at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. He went 4-for-8 against Ohio Northern University, with four doubles and two runs scored.
Senior Brendon Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) was awarded an All-OAC honorable mention nod. Borkey finished the season with a record of 4-5. He appeared in 14 games, with 10 starts. Borkey pitched a career-high 67.2 innings, while collecting a career-high 49 strikeouts. He finished the season with a 3.46 earned run average and closed out two games for saves. This season, Borkey pitched a complete-game shutout against Wilmington on April 1, and surrendered just four hits, with six strikeouts. He posted a career-high seven strikeouts against Marietta College on April 19. Borkey finished his career with 109 strikeouts, a record of 8-10 and a 3.91 ERA in 149.2 innings.
