COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ten seniors took to the field for the last time donning the Purple and White, as the Capital University baseball team hosted the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. Game 1 – Capital 8, John Carroll 7
John Carroll got on the board first when Mike Raschilla doubled in a run in the top of the second. The Blue Streaks added two more run in the top of the third, on a double and then a sacrifice fly.
The Crusaders responded with three runs in the home half of the third inning. Senior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif. / Vista) led off with a single up the middle. Junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) laid a bunt down the third-base line for a single. Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) placed a bunt perfectly down the first-base line and the pitcher was unable to get the out at first. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) took advantage with the bases juiced and lined a pitch into right field that scored Ennis and Ary. Senior Logan Bastin (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) reached on a fielder's choice to second base, as Otto was tagged out by the second baseman. Smith scored on the play as he did not slow down rounding third and there was no play at the plate after the second baseman tried to get Bastin out at first.
Senior Brent Shannon (Greenfield, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) led the bottom of the fourth off with a high chopper just to the right of the pitcher's mound and the shortstop had no play at first. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) dropped down a well-placed bunt on the third-base side for a single. As John Carroll put the wheel play on in an apparent bunt situation, Ennis placed a bunt towards the normal second baseman area. Since the second baseman was covering first because the first baseman charged towards home, there was no one there and it was an easy single. Shannon took full advantage of the well-placed bunt and scored from second as he never slowed down rounding third. Foley advanced to third and Ennis moved up to second as the throw home was not in time to get Shannon at the plate.
Smith drove a ball to deep left field for a sac fly while Foley tagged up from third. Otto reached on an error as the right fielder dropped a fly ball. Ennis scored on the error. Cap held a 6-3 lead after four innings in the books.
The Blue Streaks plated a run in the top of the seventh off of an RBI single from Dominic Mittiga.
Ary and Smith recorded back-to-back singles with one out to start a rally in the home portion of the seventh. Bastin ripped a shot down the left-field line for a double, which cleared Ary and Smith for two runs.
John Carroll added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, on two hits and two Cap errors.

The Crusaders added another run in the bottom of the second. Junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) singled through the right side with one out. Hopkins advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) singled to center field. Ennis laid down a sac bunt to plate Hopkins from third and give Capital a 2-0 lead after two innings.
