ADA, Ohio – Alexander Smith recorded four doubles as he went 4-for-8 on the day. The Capital University baseball team lost both games of the doubleheader to Ohio Northern University Sunday. Cap dropped game one, 12-5, and lost game two in seven innings due to severe weather, 5-2.
Game 1 – Ohio Northern 12, Cap 5
Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) led the game off with a double to right field. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) singled to the second baseman and allowed Smith to move to third. After Otto was picked off at first by the pitcher. Senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) lined a pitch to center field, which scored Smith from third. Cetnarowski stole second. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) recorded a two-out RBI single to center field that Cetnarowski scored on.
Freshman Ben Bethay (Lagrange, Ky. / Old Ham County) singled to left field with one out in the top of the second. Junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) singled up the middle and put runners on first and second with one out. Smith reached on a fielder's choice to the short stop, Ary was out on the play. A throwing error from the second baseman allowed Bethay to score.
With a 3-0 lead and the game in the top of the third, Cetnarowski singled to the right center field gap. Cetnarowski stole second and then scored on junior Daniel Walters' (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) double to right center. Walters then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bastin drove in Walters with an RBI single to right.
The Polar Bears cut the Cap lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third. ONU scored three runs on four hits. In the bottom of the fourth, Ohio Northern took a 7-5 lead when they scored four runs on five hits. The Polar Bears added three more runs in the home half of the seventh that came on three hits and two Cap errors. ONU had two runners cross the plate in the bottom of the eighth to extend its lead to 12-5, which was the final result.
Zach Foster got the win in game one, despite pitching just 1.1 innings in relief.
Senior Brendon Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) picked up the loss. He went three innings with three strike outs.
Smith led Cap with a 3-for-5 game with three doubles, a stolen base and a run scored. Bastin tallied two hits in four plate appearances and drove in two RBIs.
Game 2 – Ohio Northern 5, Capital 2 – 7 innings
Smith started the second game the same way he started the first game, with a double, this time to left center. Ary laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Smith to third. Smith touched home plate on a wild pitch by the pitcher, to put Cap up 1-0.
The Polar Bears took a 2-1 lead when they scored two runs on one hit with one Capital error.
The Crusaders managed to tie the game up in the top of the second. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) drew a walk to start the inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) dropped down a sac bunt and moved Connor to third. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) singled to center field, which scored Connor.
The game remained tied until the home half of the seventh inning. Ohio Northern scored three runs on two hits and two Capital errors. The game was called in the seventh due to severe weather and lightning.
Josh Mohr picked up the win in game two for ONU. He pitched five innings in relief with four strike outs.
Junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) got the loss. He pitched all seven innings and did not concede an earned run. Borkey also struck out six ONU batters.
Cap falls to 16-19 overall and 4-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders return to action on Saturday as they host the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. It will be Senior Day for Capital baseball, so be sure to come show your support for this year's seniors. First pitched is scheduled for 1 p.m.
