COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Wednesday afternoon as it hosted the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University. Cap lost game one, 11-6, and lost game two, 8-4. Daniel Walters posted a 5-for-9 day at the plate.
Game 1 – Muskingum 11, Capital 6
Muskingum jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) put the Crusaders on the board when he ripped a single to center field and scored freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon), who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Fighting Muskies added a run in the top of the third, when A.J. Kazmierczak singled to center field and scored Austin DeVore.
Otto started the home half of the third with a single through the left side. Senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) doubled to left field and advanced Cetnarowski to third. Walters then lined a single through the left side to score Cetnarowski. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) hit a ball in the left center field gap, for a double, that allowed Connor to score.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) reached base safely on a fielder's choice, Connor was able to score from third. Cap held its first lead of the game through five innings of play.
Muskingum scored eight runs in a span of three innings, to regain the lead and make the score 11-4.
Freshman Tyler Osborne (Newark, Ohio / Newark) put Capital on the board in the bottom of the ninth, when he drove in Walters on a single to center. Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) drove in junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) from third base.
Brandon Bush picked up the win and Kyle Schmitgen earned the save for Muskingum.
Walters finished game one with four hits, two RBIs, two doubles, and one run scored. Smith had three hits, a double, and an RBI.
Game 2 – Muskingum 8, Capital 4
It was a pitcher's duel through the first five innings of play, as both starters held the opponents to scoreless baseball. Gibbons made a diving stop in the hole and flipped to freshman Ross Thompson (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) who came over to cover the bag.
The Fighting Muskies put three runs up in back-to-back innings to take a 6-0 lead after seven innings of play. Muskingum added two more runs in the top of the ninth.
Gibbons recorded a one-out single up the middle to get the ninth inning started for Cap. Senior Brent Shannon (Greenfield, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) came in to pinch run for Gibbons. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Osborne singled to left as Shannon scored. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) picked up an RBI as he singled to right center. Smith drove in Osborne, with an RBI single to right field. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) reached on a fielder's choice and Colburn was able to score from third on the play.
Thompson picked up the loss, but surrendered just one earned run. Thompson went five and two-thirds innings, scattered five hits, and struck out two batters.
Colburn went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI and a run scored. Smith and Foley each went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Capital is now 14-12 overall and 3-5 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Crusaders return to action Friday afternoon as they travel to the University of Mount Union for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
