OBERLIN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action for the second straight day. Cap battled the Yeomen of Oberlin College. Zackary Ary led Capital with a 3-for-5 day, in the 13-6 victory.
Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) started the game with an infield single to the shortstop. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) reached on a throwing error by the first baseman, Smith scored on the play.
Oberlin scored two runs in the home half of the first, when Brendan Mapes hit a two-run double.
Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) started the top of the third off with a bunt single. Otto then stole second base. Senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) singled to right center and scored Otto. Cetnarowski stole second and advanced on a throwing error by the catcher. Connor was hit by a pitch. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) reached on a fielder's choice and scored Cetnarowski. Ary singled to the third baseman and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) scored on the throwing error. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) singled to center and drove in Ary. Cap led 6-2 headed into the home half of the third inning.
The Yeomen added two runs in the bottom of the third, on one hit and one Capital error. They added two more runs in the home half of the fourth. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth.
After two walks put runners on first and second, Otto doubled down the left field line to score Caporale. Cetnarowski then ripped one to left field for a double, allowing Otto and Gilbert both to score.
Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) led off the top of the ninth with a double to right center. Ary then singled to right field, which allowed Walters to score. Caporale recorded a double to right field and scored Ary from third easily. Caporale and Gilbert would score on a Connor single up the middle.
Sophomore Nick Beck (Chardon, Ohio / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) achieved his second win on the season. Beck went four innings, with three strike outs, and scattered just three hits.
Ary finished the day with a 3-for-5 performance and scored a game-high three runs. Otto had a 3-for-6 day, with a double, two runs and one RBI. Caporale had two hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Capital is now 14-10 overall on the season. The Crusaders return to action Tuesday when the Fightin' Muskies of Muskingum University come to Clowson Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
