Cap Hits Three Home Runs in Victory

LANCASTER, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Tuesday afternoon as it took on the Bobcats of Ohio University-Lancaster. Tyler Gibbons went 3-for-3 on the day in Cap's 15-6 victory.

The Crusaders got on the board first in the top of the second. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) led the inning off with a solo home run to right center. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) hit a ball up the middle for a single. Colburn advanced to third on ground out in the infield, followed by a balk. Junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) sent a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall to put Capital up 3-0. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) drew a two-out walk and then stole second base. Freshman Logan Williams (Mason, Ohio / Mason) singled to right field and scored Otto from second base.

The Bobcats managed to score two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning.

Freshman Ben Bethay (Lagrange, Ky. / Old Ham County) reached base and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman to start the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Sean Pettibone (Ashville, Ohio / Teays Valley) pinch ran for Bethay. After a wild pitch moved Pettibone to third, Ary singled up the middle and scored Pettibone.

Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) led the top of the sixth off with a single through the left side and stole second. Freshman Billy Porter (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) followed with a single through the left side to score Gibbons from second. Ary then ripped a ball to right field for a double. Otto singled through the left side and scored Porter. Williams singled to left field, which allowed Ary to score. Junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) drew a walk followed by a walk from Connor to load the bases. Colburn reached on a fielder's choice as Smith was out at home on a throw from the third baseman for the force out. Gibbons came up to the plate again and drove in two runs with a single to center field. Cap held an 11-2 lead after five and a half innings.

OU-Lancaster plated four runs, on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 11-6 after six full innings of play.

Sophomore Mitchell Bodden (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) reached first on a dropped third strike by the catcher. Walters made the Bobcats pay for that with a two-run blast to center field. Colburn recorded a one-out double to right center. Gibbons picked up another RBI, with a single to right field. Porter singled to the third baseman. Otto laid down a bunt, and the pitcher threw it to right field, which allowed Gibbons to score.

Sophomore Nick Beck (Chardon, Ohio / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) picked up his first win of the season. Beck struck out four batters and scattered five hits in just three innings in relief.

Gibbons finished the day with three hits and a game-high three RBIs. Ary went 3-for-5 on the day, with a home run. Connor had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a home run with two RBIs. Colburn had a strong day at the plate with three hits in five at-bats.

Cap is now 12-9 overall with the non-conference victory. The Crusaders return to action on Thursday when they travel to the Yeomen of Oberlin College. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
