COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team hosted the Tigers of Wittenberg University at Clowson Field for the Vs. Cancer Foundation fundraising game. Tyler Gibbons led Cap with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, in the 9-6 loss.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after they scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning.
Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) led off the home half of the third inning with a bunt single down the third base line. Senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) recorded a one-out single to right field, Otto advanced to third. Cetnarowski stole second. Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) drew a walk to load the bases for Capital. Junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Otto from third. Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) singled to right center and picked up an RBI when Walters scored.
Wittenberg added a run in the top of the fourth when Timmy Bates singled to center and scored Josh Kaplan.
In the bottom of the sixth, Otto started a two-out rally with an infield single to the shortstop. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) singled to left field and advanced Otto to third. Cetnarowski lined a single to left field to score Otto and allowed Bastin to go to third. After a wild pitched moved Cetnarowski to second, Walters reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which scored Bastin. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) recorded a pinch-hit single to left field that Cetnarowski scored on.
The Crusaders cut the lead to 8-5 after six innings.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Bates reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Brad Malott to score.
Freshman Logan Williams (Mason, Ohio / Mason) started the bottom of the ninth inning off with a single up the middle. With two outs and a runner on second, Bastin ripped a double down the left field line to score Williams.
Andrew Goodpaster picked up the win for Wittenberg with three innings of relief work. Jace Barga led the Tigers with a 3-for-5 day at the dish. Bates tallied a game-high four RBIs, on two hits.
Junior Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) grabbed the loss. Junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) and senior Tyler Spears (Washington Courthouse, Ohio / Washington) pitched two shutout innings in relief. Borkey struck out one and Spears notched two strike outs.
Gibbons finished the game 3-for-5 with one RBI. Otto and Bastin both went 3-for-6 at the plate for Capital. Otto scored two runs. Bastin scored a run and drove in a run.
Capital is now 9-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss. The Crusaders return to action Saturday, when the Fightin' Quakers of Wilmington College come to Clowson Field for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
