TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team took to the diamond in the Ohio Athletic Conference openers against Heidelberg University. Cap lost game one, 11-2, and lost game two, 4-2. Daniel Walters went 4-for-8 on the day.
Game 1 – Heidelberg 11, Capital 2
Neither team was able to score in the first four innings. In the fifth inning, Heidelberg managed to score four runs, on four hits and three Capital errors.
Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) led the top of the sixth off with a double to left center field. Senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) singled through the right side and advanced Bastin to third. Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) ripped one down the left field line and scored Bastin from third.
In the home half of the sixth, Heidelberg added four more runs. Those runs came on five hits. The Student Princes added three more runs in the top of the seventh on five hits.
Cetnarowski led the eighth inning off with a single down the left field line. Walters then singled to the shortstop and Cetnarowski advanced to second. Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) singled through the right side and loaded the bases for Capital. Junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) recorded an RBI single through the left side.
Capital finished game one with two runs on 12 hits. Heidelberg scored 11 runs on 15 hits.
Anthony Hajdu picked up the win for the Student Princes. He pitched six innings and struck out seven batters.
Senior Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W. Va. / John Marshall) got the loss, but struck out seven in five and two-thirds innings.
Game 2 – Heidelberg 4, Capital 2
Heidelberg got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Cory Jacobs recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Darrin Shirk. The Student Princes added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning, Hopkins singled to right field. Senior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif. / Vista) reached on a fielder's choice. Ennis then advanced to second. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) singled through the left side and Ennis advanced. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) singled down the left field line and scored Ennis to pull Cap within two runs.
Walters led the top of the sixth inning off with a double to left field. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) reached on a fielder's choice where Walters was out at third on the play. Hopkins recorded a two-out single to right field and Connor advanced to third. Ennis drove in Connor with an RBI single to right field.
The Student Princes added a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 4-2.
Cameron Deemer got the win in game two. He pitched five and two-thirds innings and struck out three. Cory Jacobs earned the save with two strike outs in one inning of work.
Senior Brendon Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) got the loss in game two. He pitched six innings and struck out five batters. Junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) struck out four batters in two innings of work.
With the losses, Cap falls to 9-8 overall and 0-2 in OAC play. The Crusaders return to the diamond on Wednesday as the Tigers of Wittenberg University come to Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
