COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team took to Clowson Field as the Big Red of Denison University made the trip to Columbus. Cap was led by a Beau Otto 1-for-2 performance at the plate, in the 11-3 loss.
The Big Red jumped out to an early five run lead in the top of the second inning. Denison started the inning with five consecutive hits and scored the fifth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the second, junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) drew a one-out walk. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) belted a double to left center. Senior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif. / Vista) hit a pitch deep to right field for a sac fly, as Walters scored from third. After two innings, Capital trailed Denison 5-1.
Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) went three up, three down in the top of the third inning.
Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) led off the home half of the third with a double to center field. Caporale hustled around first and legged out a double. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Wilmington) lined a single to left field and moved Caporale to third with no outs. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) reached on a fielder's choice when Denison tried to turn a double play. Caporale scored on the play. Foley moved into scoring position when he stole second base. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) ripped one to left field, which allowed Foley to score. The Crusaders cut the Big Red lead to 5-3, after three.
Denison plated three more runs in its half of the fourth. Sam Frazen hit a three-run home run to left field. The Big Red added three more runs in the top of the eighth. Denison held an 11-3 lead and Cap was not able to put any more runs on the board.
For the game, the Big Red scored 11 runs, on 11 hits. The Crusaders crossed the plate three times on five hits. Neither team made an error.
Bastin finished 1-for-3 on the day and grabbed an RBI. Caporale and Otto both went 1-for-2 on the day for Cap.
Mikey Rivera picked up the win for Denison. Rivera went five innings, with seven strike outs and gave up just one hit.
Colburn picked up the loss, with two and two-thirds innings of work. Junior Patrick Avellano (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alpharetta) pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief. Avellano struck out four batters and scattered two hits. Sophomore Gabe Morris (Pataskala, Ohio / Newark Catholic) finished the game for Cap with one and two-thirds. Morris recorded two strike outs and surrendered one hit.
With the loss, Capital falls to 9-6 on the season. Cap returns to the diamond tomorrow as they travel to Tiffin, Ohio. The Crusaders have a doubleheader with Student Princes of Heidelberg University in the Ohio Athletic Conference season opener. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
