FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Capital University baseball team closed out a three-game series against Franklin College on Sunday. Tyler Cetnarowski led the way for Cap with a 2-for-2 day at the plate, in the 9-5 loss.
The Grizzlies got on the board first with a two-run blast from Sam Claycamp.
In the top of the second, senior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) led off with a walk. Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) singled to the third baseman to load the bases for Capital. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) grounded into a double play, but Cetnarowski was able to score.
Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) doubled to left field to start the top of the third. After a groundout allowed Otto to advance to third, junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to score Otto. After three innings of play the score was tied 2-2.
Franklin erupted for seven runs in the home half of the fourth. The Grizzlies recorded the seven runs on four hits, all of which were singles.
Walters led the top of the sixth inning with a double to left field. Caporale hit a one-out single to right field, which advanced Walters to third. Caporale moved up to second base on a wild pitch. Senior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif. / Vista) drove in Walters with an RBI single to left field. A wild pitch allowed both Caporale and Ennis to advance a base. Caporale scored when the pitcher threw another wild pitch and Ennis advanced to third.
Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) belted a one-out double to left center in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) singled to right field and moved Bastin to third. Walters drew a walk to load the bases for Capital. Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) drew a walk that scored Bastin.
Neither team scored the rest of the game and Franklin won 9-5.
Cetnarowski led Cap with a 2-for-2 day at the plate. Smith finished the day with a 2-for-4 performance and recorded an RBI.
Senior Jacob Sheaf (Cincinnati, Ohio / Wilmington) picked up the loss and is 1-1 on the season. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) pitched four scoreless innings in relief. Colburn recorded three strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
With the loss, Capital fell to 9-5 on the season. The Crusaders return to action Saturday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio, to battle the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. The Ohio Athletic Conference opener is a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
