AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team continued its highly successful spring break trip by taking in its seventh win of the season after defeating Neumann College, 7-4, on Friday afternoon. Brandon Borkey reeled in win number two of the season while freshman Beau Otto had a second successful day at the plate to pace Cap.
Capital (7-1) had to work from behind after surrendering two runs in the first but tied the game by the end of the second inning. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Cap's first run of the game, and then benefitted from an error in the field the following frame. Doug Connor came around to score after reaching on an error, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch allowed him to reach third base, then sophomore Joe Caporale hit a run-scoring single.
Neumann's Evan Emerich hit a go-ahead home run to regain the lead, but Capital tied the contest again in the bottom half when freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) led the inning off with a single then recorded his first collegiate stolen base. Another wild pitch advanced Otto to third before he scored on a ground out to the right side.
Capital's first lead came within its fourth consecutive inning of scoring, and as a result of its biggest burst of offense in the bottom of the fourth inning. Connor was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced into scoring position by way of a balk. Cap continued its smart base running when Connor advanced to third on a fly out to right field. Caporale plated his second run of the game with a well-placed groundout to the right side, scoring Connor and giving Capital the lead.
With the bases empty and two outs, Capital recorded four consecutive single beginning with KOPKINS. Otto recorded his second hit of the game and put runners on the corners before senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) and Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to put the Crusaders up 6-3.
Brandon Borkey gave up an unearned run in the fifth, but with the score 6-4 the combination of junior Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) and Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio/Lake Catholic) kept the Knights off the board for the remaining four innings. Hamrick allowed just one base runner via a walk while striking out two. Joseph Borkey struck out four over two innings of work, including three to close out the ninth.
Otto was one of three Crusaders to post a pair of hits in Friday's win, and was his second multi-hit performance in as many days played over three games. Cetnarowski and Bastin joined him in that effort, and the duo also posted a pair of RBIs, as well.
The win improved Capital to 7-1. With its seventh win, they exceed the most wins accumulated over its annual spring break trip since 2006. The previous most wins was six, which was accomplished by the 2016 and 2012 teams.
Capital will end its spring break adventure against St. Mary's (MN) on Saturday morning, March 3.
