Capital Suffers First Setback of Season

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team was in action Sunday afternoon as it took on the Vikings of Augustana College. Senior Jake Foley went 2-for-5 to lead Cap in the 7-3 loss.

After the first two batters for Cap were retired by strikeouts, senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) lined one up the middle to give Capital its first hit of the game.

Junior Patrick Avellano (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alpharetta) got the start on the mound for the Crusaders. Bastin made a diving stop down the line and got up to throw the runner out at first for the second out in the bottom of the first inning. Avellano went three up three down in the first inning.

Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) blasted a one-out double to left center in the top of the second. Connor managed to make it to third base, but failed to score.

After the first two batters reached on errors for the Vikings, Avellano struck out the next batter. After a walk loaded the bases with one out, Avellano battled and got the next hitter to go down swinging. Senior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) recorded an unassisted out to end the inning unscathed.

Sophomore Mitchell Bodden (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) led the top of the third off with a single to right center.

In the bottom of the third, Avellano got the first two batters to ground out to sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield). After a walk put a runner on first, senior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif. / Vista) threw out a base runner trying to steal second base to end the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Caporale made a tough play look easy as he picked up a slow roller up the middle and threw the runner out at first to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Bodden drew a two-out walk, before senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) and Colburn recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases for Bastin. Bastin sent a pitch to deep center, but it was caught on the warning track.

After a lead-off single by Mitch Ruh of Augustana, Avellano managed to retire the next three in a row to keep the score tied at 0-0 after five innings of play.

The Vikings scored five runs and rallied after a close call at first in the bottom of the sixth inning. They recorded five runs on four hits and one Capital error to take a 5-0 lead. Augustana added a run in the seventh and eighth innings to extend its lead to 7-0.

Capital would not go quietly in the top half of the ninth. Connor was hit by a pitch to give Cap a runner on first with one out. Junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) recorded a single to put two runners on with one out. Caporale lined out to center. Bodden hit a ball to center field and reached on an error, which allowed junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine), who pinch ran for Connor, along with Ary to score, putting two runs on the board for Cap. Foley then singled through the right side and picked up an RBI as Bodden scored.

The Vikings tallied seven runs on eight hits and made two errors. Jake Reinhardt led Augustana with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Brad Dubow earned the win, going seven innings giving up six hits.

Capital finished with three runs on eight hits and committed four errors. Foley picked up a multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 performance to lead Cap. Avellano picked up the loss, but only surrendered two hits in five innings.

With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 2-1 on the season. Capital returns to action tomorrow when it takes on the Scots of Alma College at 10:30 a.m.
