BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Saturday afternoon against Baldwin Wallace University. The Crusaders were swept, 23-0 and 5-2.
Game 1 – Baldwin Wallace 23, Capital 0
Junior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) went 2-for-3 to lead the Crusaders. Colburn now leads the Ohio Athletic Conference with a .432 batting average. Sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) went 2-for-4.
The Capital defense turned two double-plays.
Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) went 1-for-2. Bastin leads the OAC with 43 RBIs. He is second in the OAC for homeruns with seven and batting average with .427.
Game 2 – Baldwin Wallace 5, Capital 2
The Yellow Jackets scored the first four runs in game two.
Capital got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington) led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. Junior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota Ohio) singled through the left side. After Boehm advanced to third on a double-play, he later scored on a passed ball. The Crusaders cut the lead 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, Gibbons walked with one out. Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio) reached on a fielding error which allowed Gibbons to advance to third. Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio) grounded out, but got an RBI when Gibbons scored.
Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) recorded seven strike outs in three innings of work. Alex Mukensturm (Tecumseh, Mich.) added one strike out in his one inning. Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio/ Worthington Christian) contributed three strike outs in four innings.
Capital falls to 18-14 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. The Crusaders will be in action again at home on Saturday April, 30 when they host Ohio Northern University. This will be Capital's Senior Day and will honor lone senior Kirby Boehm.
