Capital Splits Conference Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Friday afternoon against the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. The Crusaders won the first game, but fell in the second.

Game 1 - Capital 6, Heidelberg  0

Junior Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W.Va.), now 3-0 on the season, had another stellar performance on the mound. Wellman pitched eight innings in the victory. He struck out eight batters and surrendered only three hits.

Capital scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Zackary Ary (London, Ohio) doubled down the left field line with one out. After a fly out, junior Brett Colburn (Greenfield, Ohio) singled to right center. Sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases for the Crusaders. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) singled to right center, which allowed Ary and Colburn to score.

Capital added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Colburn recorded a one-out single to the shortstop. Smith then reached on a fielder's choice and Colburn advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. Bastin singled to the third base side, which scored Colburn. The Crusaders extended their lead to 3-0.

After freshman Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio) singled up the middle in the sixth, Ary drew a walk. Junior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/ Licking Heights) singled up the middle, which scored Caporale and Ary. Capital's lead extended to 5-0 after six innings of play.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Caporale recorded an RBI double to right center. Sophomore Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio) scored on Caporale's double.

The Crusaders finished game one with six runs on 14 hits.


Game 2 - Heidelberg 8, Capital 3

The Crusaders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the second game. Foley started the inning off with a walk. Colburn then singled to left field. After Smith was hit by a pitch, junior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) reached on a fielder's choice. Foley and Colburn scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.

Capital added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Cetnarowski later scored on a wild pitch.

The Student Princes scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, giving Heidelberg its first lead of the day. In the top of the seventh inning, Heidelberg added three more runs.

Colburn finished game two 2-for-4 and now has 11 multi-hit games on the season. Senior Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington) went 2-for-3 to lead Capital.


Colburn finished the day with six hits in nine plate appearances. He scored three times and was perfect in his 12 chances in the field. He was part of three different double plays turned by the Crusaders, including one where he fielded the ball going up the middle and tossed the ball directly out of his glove to shortstop Joe Caporale for the successful 4-6-3 turn.

The Crusaders are now 10-6 overall and 1-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. Capital returns to action on Tuesday, March 29 as they take on Ohio-Lancaster at Clowson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
