Matthew P. Smith MS, ATC – Head Athletic Trainer
Matt Smith was named the head athletic trainer at Capital University in June 2013. He joins the Crusaders after having served as the assistant director of sports medicine and director of baseball operations at The Citadel (S.C.), an NCAA Division I institution. It served as his second stint with the Bulldogs after beginning his athletic training career there in 2005. He also spent time at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (N.Y.). Smith is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). He earned his bachelor’s in exercise science with a concentration in athletic training from the University of Toledo in 2005. He earned a master’s in health, exercise and sports sciences from The Citadel in 2007.
Danielle Szalay - Associate Athletic Trainer
Danielle Szalay joins the Capital University athletic training team for her first year. She comes to Capital from the United States Military Academy where she spent eight years serving the Black Knights' volleyball, softball, women's basketball and women's soccer teams. Szalay also spent the last year treating Army's men's and women's rugby teams. Prior to her time at West Point, she was an assistant trainer at Kent State University, where she also completed her graduate work. Szalay was an intern with the Toledo Mudhens (AAA baseball) while completing her undergraduate studies at Bowling Green State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in athletic training in 2003.
Autumn Davis Hammonds - Associate Athletic Trainer
Autumn Davis Hammonds is a 2005 graduate of the University of Toledo before embarking on a trek that took her to two different colleges and one outside organization before landing at Capital. Most recently, Davis Hammonds spent six years at Austin Peay University (TN) as an assistant athletic trainer. Prior to that, she spent two years as a graduate assistant serving the Sports Enhancement and Orthopedic Center in Bloomington, Illinois while studying at Illinois State University, where she earned her master's degree in kinesiology. Davis Hammonds also spent time at Georgia Southern University (GA) as an assistant athletic trainer after her undergraduate work.
